There are many causes that contribute to the development of dry eyes:

  • Aging
  • Post-menopausal hormonal changes
  • Medications such as antihypertensives, anxiolytics, antidepressants, and antihistamines
  • Systemic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, collagen vascular disease such as lupus and fibromyalgia, and Sjogrens disease
  • Eyelid abnormalities and local skin disease such as acne rosacea
  • Recent eye surgery such as LASIK, cataract, glaucoma and retina surgery
  • Inside and outside environment including wind, low humidity, AC vents and fan exposure, colder winter temperatures and spring/summer/fall allergens
